Advice from a famous bass player

    Makes sense to me...
I've been a pilgrim on this earth, since the day of my birth, I'm a long way from my home.

Whether I play bass or guitar with others I listen to them and adapt to suit the song & the other parts--but more so when I'm playing bass.

Seriously if the bass and drums are not listening to the band it does not bode well for the sound. What is interesting for me is when we pull in rhythm player subs (bass or drums) into our band and at rehearsal the person says- "hey, you aren't playing this song like everyone else". Sometimes we tend to forget that over time a band (especially a jazz band) will tend to deviate more from the standard charts.

Well in a way they were listening.

When I taught guitar/bass & had some student bands I always knew a band was gelling when they speed up or down or just went off tempo--but they did it together.
So they got some credit for that.
