Ever been given a guitar as a gift?

After reading Brian's thread about his new Casino, I got thinking about it. Every once in a while, I'll see something in a forum from a guy who got a new guitar as a gift from his wife. It always makes me think "Wow, that's a special gal!".

It happened once for me. My first wife and my mother jointly bought me a gorgeous Takemine 12 string acoustic for Christmas in '75. I was absolutely flabergasted and spent that Christmas Day in seventh heaven. It turned out that the guitar had an intonation issue that couldn't be resolved, and in the end, was exchanged for an electric 12 string (Ironically, my Toledo 12 string that I'd sold about five years earlier, and happened to be hanging on the wall in a Victoria pawnshop the day we took the Takemine back).

What a great gift to get. Anybody else ever had it happen?

I'm not sure that I went a guitar as a gift, it's such a personal thing.

    Sorry, long story here.

I quit playing after a seriously alcohol fueled time period and went into the Air Force is 1983. Got rid of everything. Jump forward to 2002, divorced 2 years and met Joyce (wife now). While we were dating, I would stop by her house and pick up her daughter's (Erica) acoustic guitar and noodle around playing power ballads; I was a misguided glam fan at the time. Right before Christmas, shows me this brand new Squier acoustic that Erica was giving to her boyfriend for a present. I played it for a while and said it was a pretty nice guitar (I hadn't developed standards yet). Well come Christmas, I got a new Squier acoustic. Erica bought one for her boyfriend and Joyce bought one for me. After six years, I really hated that guitar and wanted to upgrade but since it was a gift from my wife, it was tough to do and I don't think she knows I did.

My first guitar a Yamaha acoustic was a Christmas gift from one of my aunts. When I enlisted in the Army my cousin pawned it.

This could start a new thread!! When I went into the Air Force, my brother took my custom built 2x15 cabinet and cut it in half to make a pair of 1x15 pa speakers. Fortunately I quit playing before he did that but he could of had the decency to give me some money for it.

Hey Stan, I know you will curse me for posting it again-but my Splattercaster was a gift. A co-worker insisted that he wanted me to have it-I argued with him but he said I had to take it. He was relentless!
And I have a Saga Tele kit that was also given to me as well. Originally was a clear coat, now its burgundy.

I got a plastic guitar for Christmas as a small child--it wasn't a real guitar really, but it was more than a toy.
Then years later when I started playing for real I got my classical for Christmas.
My Parents also bought my first electric & my bass. Not for Christmas or my birthday, but because they saw I was serious about learning.
Years later I was over at my parents after a band practice when I was playing bass.
It was cold outside so rather than leave them in my car I brought my bass and a small practice amp inside.
My Mom was surprised the bass was the same one they bought me years later.

I told her it was a fun bass to play and I had no intention of getting rid of it.
I've been a pilgrim on this earth, since the day of my birth, I'm a long way from my home.

It occured to me that I forgot one. A couple of years ago, one of the kids ay work mentioned he had a Strat with a cracked neck pocket that he was just going to turf in the garbage. I jokingly said he should let me know when and where and I'd go dumpster-diving. A couple of hours later, when he came back from lunch, he gave me this poor abused guitar. It was wearing several coats of paint that had been applied without removing the hardware and as promised, the body was split near the neck joint. I've nicknamed it "The Rat-caster" and it's gone through several incarnations, wearing whatever spare parts happen to be lying around. At the moment, it's flat black with a white guard loaded with two vintage PAF's flanking an Artec rail pickup, a vintage tremelo. and a badly abused 59 Telecaster neck. Not a great guitar, but free is a very good price. One day I'll get around to properly modding it and will post some pics.
