    I do however like the look of the 4 + 2 arrangement of the machine heads
    I'm sure it's just cosmetics. I'd love to find a place that sells headstock overlays....similar to pickguard material, but thinner, so that it would flex to fit the curve where Fender headstocks ram up to the nut location.
