I have a fascination with trapeze tailpieces, and it's all about the way they look. I know I've read something derogatory about them somewhere....might have been to do with Gibson 335's with stopbars being better than the earlier trapeze tailpiece models....but I'm not clear on why. I can see where they'd increase string tension possibly because the strings might be longer than a stopbar, hardtail, or string-through, but other than that, is there any other reason not to use one? I'm kicking around some ideas for a future project, and a Strat or Tele with a trapeze is one possibility.

I'm guessing that dB, with his collection of archtops, will have something interesting to contribute, but I'd also like to hear from the rest of you too, if you own or have owned something with a trapeze.

When I was dealing with Fred Pierce at ZZ Guitarworks, back when I bought the Bigsby for my Strat, I inquired about buying the Space Bridge separately (it screws into the original mounting holes for a 6-screw vintage tremelo) and using it with a trapeze. Fred mentioned he had done a trapeze Strat at one point in the past, but didn't offer any info on how it worked out.

I am curious.........

I reworked last night's bassline a bit, made it into kind of a sneaky jazz type joint. Sorry, no video today (didn't have the time before work), but here's a streaming mp3, and some tab for you bassists out there. This is more or less a scratch-track to send to a buddy in Portland so he can start writing to it. Tomorrow, I'll work on drums, and then re-record the bass with a little more style.

picked up one of these a couple of weeks back. it has a very classic sounding phase (think early Pink Floyd). i find it to be a little more useful than the MXR Phase 90 as the EH has a switch to change the phase setting to give a tighter or looser phase. if you need further control than the switch and one knob then look elsewhere. i admit this takes a bit of getting used to after using a phaser with way more control over the settings. great liquidy phase sound and perfect for many classic rock tones. it does a reasonable univibe sound as well.

So many threads in forum seem to be about comparing pickups.... I just had an experience that makes me wonder how valid these comparisons are.

Last Thursday, I took my Bigsby Strat along to band practice. I'd always wanted to hear the Fralin pickups playing good loud rock and roll - the kind of test I can't do at home. I asked the lead player if he'd set aside his American Standard Strat and play my guitar for a few songs so I could hear it. What I heard confounded me.

The guitar sounded nothing like the sound when I played it at home through my Twin Reverb. He uses a Blues Deluxe, and whether he used pedals or plugged it in direct, it sounded like a completely different instrument. I'd always thought of the Fralin's as very clean and articulate, but what I heard when the lead player played my guitar made me think about big, fuzzy, overwound SRVish-sounding pickups.

It makes me wonder whether a lot of pickup comparisons are valid and I'm questioning how meaningful the sound samples of pickups that you hear online are. Obviously, the character of the amp has a lot to do with it, but beyond that, the player's style, dynamics and pick attack seem to contribute a lot to the end result.
