Next Sunday I'm heading back to Simons to put some work into the body . Today I decided to get this ugly ebonized fretboard off to make way for the new. It came off flawlessly. I use a snap away box cutter blade as my tool of choice for this. You just heat up the fretboard with an iron & start pushing & tapping the razor edge in-between the glue surfaces on the board & neck. When the glue is soft it goes through pretty easy. When it slows down you go back at the board with the iron again. Now I can start rebuilding.

Looks much cleaner than many fingerboard removals I've seen.

As I said I am really interested to see how this one goes. One thing that makes many old archtops worthless are the necks get screwed up and the guitars are unplayable

That was one of the reasons Leo Fender wanted bolt on necks--and Fender has even made hollowbody archtops with them.

Yeah I can't really think of any hollowbodies with bolt-on necks that are really well regarded by the type of player that would play normally them

    Probably true...
But there was a point to them--even if it may not have been what a lot of hollowbody players wanted.
