Strat kit I'd like to try

There's a guy on eBay marketing a switching system that I'd like to try in one of my Strats. I imagine this could be done fairly inexpensively if a person had the knowledge and skills (such as Fussel), but for guys that don't have the expertise, or the vision and physical dexterity (like me), it looks like a good answer for around fifty bucks. I think my green Strat might be a good candidate for this....

This guys also got some Tele, LP, and JazzBass kits that look interesting. The Tele kit in particular has an interesting control plate layout. No affiliation to the seller, just wanted to share. Esoteric wiring for dummies....Right up my alley!

Could be cool, at least he admits that unless you are a studio guitarist you'd be unlikely to use more than a few of them.

It's also likely some of the options would sound similar to other ones.

Yeah, you're probably right. I have a Strat with an UltiMod harness that produces 13 sounds from three pickups and there are only about five of them I use.....But none of them are combinations that a standard Strat switch would produce. I'm reasonably sure I wouldn't use the phasing options that much (if at all), but the parallel and series options intrigue me.

    Series/parallel has some cool uses.

I have that option on two guitars.

it is a neat idea but all that fiddling would be very distracting to me personally

I'm not sure I see it as particularly complex. A Fender with S-1 has five pickup positions on the switch and the button on the volume pot, and I think I might have as many issues with that as with six toggles.

My cherryburst Strat with the UltiMod harness uses a 5 way super switch and a three position rotary tone bank in place of the middle tone control and I found it a bit intimidating for a few days. Fairly quickly, you get used to where the good positions are.

I know this might not be the right thing for everybody, but I think it's cool.

It's always good to have more options such as more tones but too many can take you away from playing and more to experimenting.

Yeah, I have a thread elsewhere in the Lounge about whether the gear enthusiasm can overtake the love of playing. My fascination with stuff like this Strat kit is part of my OCD gear fetish.

I think I'm more for simplicity with my guitars these days, I played a Strat at gigs for 30+ years and now a Tele is my axe of choice-usually in the in between neck and bridge setting.
And one of my favorites is my Melody Maker, 1 P-90 and volume & tone controls.
But I still love to mod my guitars!!

Yeah, I think we're at opposite ends of the spectrum. I like "swiss-army-knife" guitars that will do a lot of different things. I think that's why this mods appeals to me. Wish I could afford it.....If I could, I'd be doing one in my green Strat. It's not just the cost of the kit - I'd need to buy a custom pickguard with no switch slot for it to look right. I didn't much like the looks of the switches mounted over the slot. It'll probably happen for me sometime down the road.
