    Christmas music

Here is a short Youtube video that my daughter sent me.

I find this particularly interesting because I don't like like Mariah Carey or modern Christmas music at all, yet for some reason I've come to accept this particular Christmas song.

Not having seen it, I would guess the Ozzy video says it is because of the Locrian mode?

I've tried searching, but I couldn't find it. It has something to do with a certain chord that makes it so dark.

It is almost certainly the Locrian mode, which would translate to a half diminished or minor 7 flat 5 chord.

Well the video does speak about that chord...

But you still can't disregard the rhythm element either...

As for me--I'll take that Phil Spector album over Mariah Carey
I've been a pilgrim on this earth, since the day of my birth, I'm a long way from my home.

I was referring to the Ozzy style- Locrian is often very heavily used in metal.

In fact I'd also take the Phil Spector album over Mariah- I don't like her as a singer.

I have mixed feelings about Christmas music. Yes, a lot of the Christmas standards are an essential part of seasonal celebrations, and I'd miss them if they weren't played, but they're so overplayed that I'm sick of them long before Christmas has come and gone.

Modern Christmas music for the most part leaves me cold.....Whether it's the non-traditional songs that seemly oddly out-of-step with the season, or the modern artists who mangle traditional Christmas carols by twisting the words, singing all around the melody without hitting the real notes of the tune, it just sounds wrong.

The only more-recent Christmas song that I find I like is the Chris Rea tune "Driving Home For Christmas". It seems to celebrate all the traditional family sentiments that we value at this time of year. We need more songs like this, and less rocked-out screams like Springsteen's Santa Claus Is Coming To Town and novelty songs like Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer.

"I know just enough to be dangerous....."
