    new pickup day

Got my GFS VEH pickup delivered and installed today. Great Van Eddie Halen tone (get it?)
Listened through headphones tonight, will plug into the amp tomorrow.

I don't understand why it doesn't sound like Eddie's. It does have a great hard rock sound and I will get a calibrated set for an entry level Schecter SGR I am starting to mod.

Ed,s original sound had more to do with the amp then his pickups. He liked old PAF,s. He would turn his amp wide open then reduce the power to his speaker cab with a homemade governor he made with a household dimmer switch. VERY DANGEROUS! !! Lol. Live playing his techs would have to remove his tubes with a chisel because they would get so hot that they would fuse to the chassis. That's why his harmonics just seam to hop out so effortlessly. Because the amp is being driven to the brink of dying. It also has a lot to do with his playing style. I remember reading an article in Guitar Player magazine where Nuno Betincort was hanging out with him & played through his gear & remarked that it just sounded like himself through Ed's gear.

Brown Sound. I used a dimmer switch in a pedal to control the speed of one of those oil can echo units. Made for some very bizarre sounds! Over 40 years ago!

If Ed wasn't a musician, he would be a crazy engineer in a lab somewhere blowing things up. We all know about the frankensteined guitars but he also did a lot of tinkering with amps. And of course, those tone generating fingers. I will say that these pickups are perfect for hard rock (IMHO).

Are they articulate or just raw? I like to hear all the notes. Some are like a chainsaw to me. Everything just gets blurry & just plain mean.

A friend of mine loves these pickups. Says they have a real flat response. I bet he would say they are articulate as well.

He's not into the VH sound at all, but he likes a good 70s guitar tone.
I bought a relic'd guitar because I liked the way it sounded. Then I refinished it because I didn't like the way it looked.

Articulate, the notes ring out, nice and clear, not muddy.
