    SM57 article

Did not know that about the US presidents & the SM57.

I wonder if the band-The Presidents of the United States use/used SM57s

And lest you wonder where the SM58 is in all that--they are the same mics with a different top/bulb part.

I don't have one yet--but last time I bought a mic I got a greta deal on a more expensive mic--so I went for that.
Then I will have both condenser & dynamic mics.

    SM57s

That was pretty much the point of the article...
(Well that they are the standard--not that you have 5 or 6 of them)

I certainly haven't seen any point in paying $1000 per mic for something that isn't significantly better

Well I don't have that kind of cash to spend on a mic
    I own 2.
One is a cheaper Shure primarily intended as a cheap speaking/karaoke mic I got for $20 a couple of years ago (or so)
It isn't the cleanest mic--but that works for some things.
I also have a Condenser mic --my digital recorder has phantom power--so no issue there.
I got that one as it was on sale & cheaper than an SM57--so I decided to get that one now & an SM57 later.
If I did it the otehr way around it would cost me more money later.
Plus I sometimes see used SM57s for sale at one store (They sell old rental stock)
But even buying a new one will be cheaper that way.

I like the condenser--nice clean sound & it handles lows well.

I don't have less than that to spend on a mic--but a little over $100?
    Maybe.
    Sometimes.

For me it is a very hard sell. If the best mic as recognized by the industry for decades is around $100, the benefits of other mics are unclear unless you have a very specific application. I'm sure others here have mics that have cost more and they have their reasons (like wireless) but for me the SM57 is really hard to beat for what it is.

Well my COndenser mic sold for more than the SM57, and I go it for less--and it has a very clear sound--it's a studio mic though more than a live one--but for multi mic set ups I could use an SM57 as well--or with my cheap Shure..

Anyone ever try a tube driven mic? I was always wondering if they are actually better or if that is just gimmick...
