10 Reasons You Should Buy Used Music Gear

10 Reasons You Should Buy Used Music Gear

    I've bought used & I've bought new--it depends on what I want & what I can find, I'm okay with both/eitehr.
    Any thoughts?

I agree with most of it; I buy a mix of new and used to various reasons. The price advantage and the huge range of choices are definitely benefits of used. I'd like to have seen the downsides as well however

A list of downsides would be good as well--even though he does do a good job of the upside.

Okay--I add some downside as well--feel free to add to it or add reasons that are an upside that haven't been covered.

1-The article did touch on warranty--longer with new--often it doesn't matter--but if it does--then cool to have it.
2-Especially true for private sale but can happen with less than reputable stores--or stores that get scammed-Possibility of buying stolen gear.
3-stuff that people who own don't want to sell--sometimes you can only get it new...

True--but that can just as easily happen with new as well--so I didn't list it.
Even brick & mortar vs online vs private sale in person--it can happen in any of those--I have seen fakes in stores--some were sold as used, some as new.

Still something to watch out for no matter whether you buy new or used...

I have another advantage for buying used- ability to flip a purchase for more money.

I did this twice unintentionally; I bought 2 baritone horns several years back for $800 and $400 respectively. Both of them eventually wound up on consignment at a brasswind specialist. The one horn sold at $1600 and the other $1200- huge % gains for me.

This is covered under Reason #2 on the list--but thanks for providing an actual example.
This reason is more important to some than others--but mostly if you care about resale value or you plan to re-sell gear.
Or if you wind up selling for some reason & get a good return--especially a profit.

although my example is a bit more than just retaining value- it is more about buying something used that isn't selling at full retail. Rare to get that deal on new instruments
