    Synth recommendations

My son is interested in getting himself a synth and I need some recommendations.

The dilemma here is that he will not really be satisfied with anything that is too low end, however, as he is not really a keyboard player this is a delicate balance. Sure a Moog Sub phatty would be awesome but at $800 this is just too much as we don't know if he'll stick with this or if it will be a passing fancy.

    Any suggestions?

Is there a Synth Talk forum?
    That's my suggestion.

The only synths I have experience with are out of date.

But in case we can help--what is he looking for it to be able to do?

Yeah I don't really want to join another forum so I figured I'd ask here.

From what I can tell he's really interested in being able to play with the analogue synth controls (I have no idea what this stuff is called) as well as having some sort of sound bank with sampled sounds. Right-sizing this purchase is going to be difficult for me as this is a world I really don't know anything about. My gut tells you that the two ways to go are expensive (~$1000) or basically a glorified toy that is cheaper, does a lot but isn't very good.

A used one is probably the way to go at this point for what he wants

I wish I had something to offer in this discussion, but I've only ever bought one synthesizer.

Back in the 80's, when I was selling audio gear, a guy walked in and wanted to trade a Yamaha synth against some stereo gear. I couldn't take it on trade but I made a deal to buy it personally and gave it to my girlfriend (the singer in my band) for Christmas. It was an excellent unit, but knowing nothing about synths, I didn't notice it was not polyphonic, so it had some limitations.

I think most real synths are like this, if not all
